Japan Toy Safety Standard Part 1 Revision

On 4 October 2013, The Japan Toy Association (JTA) announced the first amendment of Japan Toy Safety Standard (ST-2012) Part 1. The revised standard became effective on 1 November 2013. Some major amendments are summarized as below: Acoustic Requirements Exclusion is added as follows: - Additional sound clips downloaded via internet after the purchase of toy Stability and Overload Requirements - 4.15.1 Stability of ride-on toys and seats - the scope of tested toys are extended to rocking toys (e.g. rocking horses); - 4.15.1.1 Sideway stability, feet available for stabilization – requirements are applicable to ride-on toys and toys with seats, which the height of the seat from the ground should be 27cm or more; - 4.15.1.2 Sideway stability, feet unavailable for stabilization – requirements are applicable to ride-on toys and toys with seats, which the feet/legs of the child are restricted in their sideway motion, such as by the sides of a toy mobile. Electric ride-on toys are given as example; - 4.15.1.4 Stability of toys designed to support all or part of the mass of a child except for ride-on toys and stationary toys with seats – new requirement and test method are added for stability of toys designed to support all or part of the mass of a child except for ride-on toys and stationary toys with seats,which are intended for children aged under 60 months. Slides, climbing frames, seesaw, etc. are given as examples applicable to the requirement. Inflatable vinyl toys intended to be used indoors are excluded. Requirement: The toys should not tip over when the toy is placed on a slope of a smooth surface inclined 10°±1° to the horizontal plane, and is loaded with a mass of 50 kg (± 0.5 kg) on its standing or sitting surface.
