GB 38995-2020 "Infant feeding bottles and teats (婴幼儿用奶瓶和奶嘴)" published by China's State Administration of Market Regulation (Standardization Administration) on 2020-10-21 has come into effect on 2021-11-01.
Significance:
The quality and safety of feeding bottles and teats would significantly affect the growth and health of infants and babies. This standard, therefore, imposes many tough requirements as summarized below.
Requirements:
1. Scope
➢ Specifying technical requirements, test methods, inspection rules, labelling, transportation and storage
➢ Product scope: infant feeding bottles and teats (bottles, teats, and auxiliary components) that are made of plastic, glass, metal, ceramic, silicon rubber, rubber or a combination of those materials
➢ Exclude clinical medical feeding bottles and pacifiers
2. Normative References
3. Terms and Definitions
4.1.1 Components
➢ Tidy, clean, free from foreign objects, chips, holes and deformations that obstruct use except for designed features
➢ No sharp edges and sharp points that may cause harm or danger
➢ For repeated use, the printed pattern shall meet level 1 printing ink adhesion requirements as per GB/T 9286
➢ Volumetric graduation and nominal capacity, including the minimal volumetric graduation, unit and volumetric accuracy
➢ No small parts (except through hole pins and gravity balls with warnings)
➢ Diameter of sealing disc: ≥ 35 mm
➢ Puncture and tensile resistance
4.1.2 Systematic Properties
➢ Bottle components shall fit with each other
➢ No distortion nor damage after boiling water test (except soda lime glass)
➢ No crack or breakage after thermal shock test
➢ No leakage after boiling water and thermal shock test (except feeding teats)
➢ Volumetric graduation and fluid level within bottle must be clearly visible (except metallic bottles)
➢ Safety size, length, security/retention test, flexibility and dropping test (for teats and other components for drinking). Dropping test is exempted for glass and ceramic bottles with safety warning)
4.2 Additional Requirements
➢ Compression resistance test (for plastic bottles)
➢ Thermal shock, resistance, hydrolytic resistance, stress and mechanical impact resistance tests (for glass bottles)
5. Test Methods
➢ Preparation of testing samples, and test methods of each parameter
6. Inspection Rules
➢ Inspection scheme and decision rules
7.1 Labeling
➢ Labelling must be in Simplified Chinese with a specified font size
